"Il Fatto Quotidiano": Gjadri can be turned into a prison for Albanians convicted in Italy
After reporting by the daily "Il Tempo" a few weeks ago, the Italian newspaper "Il Fatto Quotidiano" has returned to the center of attention the issue of turning the former airport of Gjadri into a prison for Albanians convicted in Italy. The article is titled: "Tirana-flop. From empty camps to prison for Albanians".
According to the report, currently 1,947 Albanians are serving sentences in Italian prisons, which make up about 10% of all prisoners of foreign nationality.
The agreement on the transfer of prisoners between Albania and Italy dates back to 2002, during the time when Roberto Castelli was the Italian Minister of the Interior in the Berlusconi government.
This agreement was renewed in 2017, during the period when the Albanian Minister of Justice was Etilda Gjonaj, and was confirmed again recently in a meeting between the Italian Minister of Justice Carlo Nordio and his Albanian counterpart, Ulsi Manja.
This initiative has sparked debate in the Italian and Albanian media, prompting questions about its effectiveness and purpose in the face of the challenges of the justice system in both countries.
