IHP: 39.1% of Albanians suffer from hypertension

39.1% of Albanians suffer from high blood pressure or hypertension, which is also the cause of heart disease and stroke in 50% of cases, says the IHP.

May is known as Blood Pressure Awareness Month as it has been observed that most people with hypertension are either not fully aware of the fact that they have high blood pressure, and as a result are untreated, or are on treatment that does not effectively control their condition.

Experts say that an individual with high blood pressure has no visible symptoms, so measuring BP is the only accurate way to identify hypertension.

Referring to IHP data, it was seen that in 2023, in Albania 36.6% of people with HTA/hypertension were unaware of it and 34.7% of people receiving medication treatment did not control it effectively.

If diagnosed early enough, hypertension can be managed through maintaining a healthy lifestyle or through the use of medications to control hypertension effectively.
