The new population that emerged from the 2023 census data showed that the large cities of the North of the country, Shkodra and Kukësi, had the greatest increase in deaths per thousand inhabitants.

According to INSTAT data, 21,286 deaths occurred in the entire country in 2023 or 9 deaths per thousand inhabitants with population data of 2.4 million inhabitants from the census.

The data show that in 2023, the highest deaths per thousand inhabitants were in Gjirokastra and Korça, respectively with 12.2 and 11.9, but the greatest increase in mortality during the period 2011 and 2023 was in Kukësi, Shkodra and Elbasan.

In 2023, Kukësi had 8.4 deaths per thousand inhabitants with the data of the cens 2023, with an increase of the indicator by 3 percentage points since 2011.

In Shkodër, 1726 people lost their lives in 2023 or 11.5 people per 1 thousand inhabitants with an increase of 2.5 percentage points compared to 2011.

After Shkodra, Elbasan had the biggest increase in mortality. In 2023, there were a total of 2,050 lives lost in Elbasan, while the population of the district with the data of the 2023 census was 232,580 inhabitants. In Elbasan, there were 8.8 deaths per thousand inhabitants with an increase of 2.3 percent compared to 2011.

Only in the district of Berat, deaths per thousand inhabitants have decreased by -0.3% in the period between the two censuses.

In 2023, 5345 people lost their lives in the District of Tirana. According to the population data of the census, deaths per 1000 inhabitants in the crosses were 7 with an increase of 0.6 percentage points from the 2011 census.

The official data from INSTAT show that the districts of Shkodra and Kukës had the largest decrease in population in percentage between the two censuses 2011 and 2023, while they also have the largest increase in mortality in the last decade./Monitor
