Meta decrees shortly before midnight the date of the local by-elections
Shortly before midnight, during a TV show, President Ilir Meta decreed March 6 to hold local by-elections.
"I decree March 6 as the date of the local by-elections ," Meta told "Opnion".
The head of state gave two dates for the elections, February 27 and March 6, but the second alternative was deemed more appropriate by him and the SP. The latter agreed with the date chosen by the president.
Today is expected that the decision, which Meta communicated in the late hours of yesterday evening to take official form.
A few days ago, the president started the procedures for holding local elections in the municipalities without a mayor: Durrës, Shkodër, Vora, Dibër, Rrogozhinë and Lushnjë.
He said yesterday that he was concerned about the possibility of boycotting them by the majority, but received assurances that such a thing would not happen during the meeting with the head of the SP parliamentary group, Taulant Balla.
Meta said the legal deadline of 45 days would give the opposition time to prepare for the elections. Regarding the clashes in the DP, Meta said that the only solution to the party situation is to face a vote.
