Cannabis plantations in Spain, 13 Albanians arrested

Albanian criminal groups in Catalonia have managed to dominate the illegal marijuana market, becoming the main players in this activity.

Dozens of clans, some in alliance and others in conflict, have expanded their networks throughout the region, exploiting every possible space for drug cultivation and distribution.

As part of the 'Trifásico' police operation, the Territorial Investigation Unit of the Southern Metropolitan Region of the Mossos d'Esquadra dismantled a criminal network, arresting 13 people, including plantation growers, intermediaries, a manager and the head of the organization. This group had been operating for years in the illegal trade of marijuana, known as 'green gold'.

According to Deputy Inspector Durán, the operation represented a significant blow against one of the most active criminal cells in the region, known for its ability to quickly set up new plantations. During this action, three large plantations were dismantled in Santa Coloma de Cervelló, Granollers and Vallirana. In the latter, the Spanish owner of the farm served as a front for the organization, acting as an intermediary for rent payments and managing the group's logistics.

The investigation began six months ago, after police noticed abnormal electricity consumption in a warehouse in Santa Coloma de Cervelló. This raised suspicions of illegal activity and led to a detailed investigation of the individuals involved, revealing their links to two other locations in Granollers and Vallirana. There, too, signs of high energy consumption were observed, reinforcing suspicions of the presence of large marijuana plantations.

During the final operation, police arrested 13 people and confiscated 5,000 cannabis plants. Four firearms were also found and seized at the home of the Spanish broker, an indication of the increasing involvement of criminal groups in the use of weapons. This case confirms that criminal organizations operating in the marijuana market are becoming increasingly sophisticated and armed.
