WHO report: Population is aging, social policies are needed

The global population is aging. According to the Global Population Health Report compiled by WHO, in 2020, for the first time, the number of people over 65 exceeded that of children under 5.

Experts predict that by 2050, people over 60 will dominate the population of 15 to 24-year-olds, and about 80% of them will live in low- and middle-income countries.

The World Health Organization emphasizes that the elderly are not a homogeneous group. Over 142 million fail to meet basic needs. Women are more at risk of poverty and loneliness in old age, and after the age of 80, they face greater physical difficulties than men.

Data shows that those with higher education and income have better health and cognitive function in old age.

Given these issues, the WHO has called for sustainable social policies that support life at all levels and address the inequalities that accompany people throughout their lives.
