In the Albanian market, ice creams contaminated with ethylene oxide, a substance dangerous to health that causes cancer in the most severe cases, have circulated.

The circulation of ice cream with ethylene oxide in the market was revealed by the head of KLSH, Arben Shehu, the day before when he spoke at the Economy and Finance Committee. Shehu stated that AKU was immediately informed about the case and that he should have taken measures to prevent their consumption.

"On 27.7.2021, the brands of ice cream were discovered, Ethylene Oxide in ice creams produced in France, it was discovered by Spain, which then notified 47 countries in the ras system, about the contamination of ice cream with Ethylene Oxide in some ice creams. Then on 30/7/2021, an email came from the leaders of AKU about this. AKU was notified immediately and should have taken measures to stop the circulation of contaminated ice creams. Ethylene oxide causes cancer, leukemia, affects reproductive capacity in men. AKU did not take any action, did not block this product" , he said.

The National Food Authority, the only institution in Albania whose sole purpose is to guarantee the food safety of Albanians, has not yet come out with an announcement to clarify the emergency situation.

Albanians, who may have consumed these ice creams contaminated with ethylene oxide, have not yet been informed of the high risk they present.

The obligation of the AKU is not only to block the product but also to inform about the type of ice cream or ice creams that contain this dangerous substance.

Until now, AKU has chosen to remain silent, raising questions about whether the contaminated products have been removed or continue to remain on the market.
