Heart attacks are increasing among young Albanians, the cardiologist: Here is

Patients with cardiac problems are constantly increasing, causing Albania to move into the red zone in terms of the frequency of the disease in the population.

In an interview for Euronews Albania, cardiologist Aurel Demiraj expresses concern that young people are being affected more and more.

"In the latest data 2024, Albania has gone down one level, we are no longer in the countries with moderate risk, we are in the group of countries with high risk. What we are looking at in clinical practice is the reduction of the age at which these problems begin," said Demira.

Without realizing it, young people are walking into emergency rooms with myocardial infarctions.

"In the 2000s, myocardial infarction was common in people over 70, in extreme cases we also had 18-17 year old patients with infarction. Statistically, the average age of myocardial infarctions until 2000 was 74-75 years old, now it has dropped much more, it has gone to 48 years old" - said the cardiologist.

Doctors blame this situation on the way of living, which has completely changed after the 90s.

"Well-being has increased, but sedentary life has increased, you have noticed the number of cars, their use, weight gain, smoking," he said.

During one year, 3000 citizens suffer myocardial infarction, 12% of them do not make it, so doctors appeal for a healthy lifestyle, starting from nutrition to physical activity.
