Washington Post: The latest scandal should bring the final punishment for the FBI director
FBI Director Christopher Wray has presided over perhaps the worst domestic infiltration scandal since FBI agent Robert Philip Hanssen was arrested for domestic espionage for the Soviet Union (and later Russia) in 2001.
But this is at least the third instance of gross mismanagement during Wray's tenure.
The Washington Post writes: "The FBI's former top spy in New York was charged Monday with taking secret cash payments of more than $225,000 while overseeing highly sensitive cases and breaking the law by trying to remove Russian billionaire Oleg Deripaska from the US sanctions list - accusations that shocked the closed world of his colleagues, senior intelligence officials".
A separate criminal indictment coming out of Washington accuses Charles McGonigal of “concealing payments of $225,000 that he allegedly received from a New Jersey man employed decades ago by an Albanian intelligence agency. The indictment also accuses him of acting to advance the interests of that person."
We need to learn everything we can about what McGonigal did at the FBI from August 2017 until his retirement in September 2018, the period covered by the first indictment. But without question, the presence of a compromised senior official handling the most sensitive counter-terrorism cases is a huge embarrassment for Wray.
But that certainly isn't even Wray's biggest mistake. The report from the House select committee investigating the January 6, 2021 attack on the Capitol found ample evidence that the FBI had significant and reliable information about the potential for violence at the Capitol. "Before January 6, many government agencies received information that those coming to the rally organized by the president were armed and had the Capitol as their target. "The intelligence community and law enforcement agencies uncovered plans for potential violence directed at a joint session of Congress," the report said. And yet, this intelligence was never operationalized by the FBI.
The overwhelming conclusion of the committee's January 6 report: “Federal and local law enforcement authorities were in possession of extensive intelligence that predicted violence on the Capitol prior to January 6. Although some of this intelligence was fragmentary, it was sufficient to warrant much more robust preparations for the security of the joint session."
The report further states: "The failure to share this intelligence and act put the lives of the police officers protecting the Capitol and all of us at risk."
FBI directors serve 10-year terms, but they serve at the president's discretion (Donald Trump appointed Wray in 2017 after firing James B. Comey). The question for President Biden is whether Americans can afford to keep him for four more years.
Of course, there are qualified candidates, Republican and Democrat, who have shown courage in examining government failures and fully appreciate the threat of domestic terrorism. Maybe Liz Cheney is available. Taken from Syri.net
