Canada, the first country to approve the Pfizer vaccine for children over 12 years old
Canada has authorized the use of the Pfizer coronavirus vaccine for children aged 12 to 15 years. Canada thus becomes the first country to approve the vaccine for this age group.
The Canadian health authorities made this decision based on data from the third phase clinical trials on children of this age.
"The department determined that this vaccine is safe and effective when used in this younger age group," said an adviser to the ministry. Pfizer says injecting her vaccine works well in this age group.
Canada has so far registered more than 1.2 million cases of coronavirus and approximately 20% of them have been in people under 19 years of age. However the risk of children getting infected or dying from Covid-19 is small, and throughout the pandemic they very rarely need hospital treatment.
As part of vaccine approval, Pfizer will need to continue to provide information to the Canadian Ministry of Health on the safety, efficacy, and quality of the vaccine for those ages 12 to 15.
Last March, Pfizer said initial results from tests of its vaccine in this age group showed 100% efficacy and a strong immune response.
The US Food and Drug Administration and the European Medicines Agency are currently considering whether they can authorize the vaccine injection for young people, with decisions to be made soon.
U.S. President Joe Biden this week laid out plans to open vaccines for 12- to 15-year-olds as soon as possible.
