Through a narrow and small door, in the left corner of the headquarters of the Democratic Party, officials, deputies or heads of branches constantly enter and leave. They hurry as soon as they enter the yard, lower their head to catch them or kick them as a sign of nervousness…
In fact, that narrow and small figure is the most accurate metaphor of what happened to the Democratic Party after April 25. The huge building, like an inn without gates, and with a noisy courtyard has turned into an "alcove" which has only the logo left as the charm of a distant and glorious past.
The last beginning of this party atrophied all over its body, happened when the US State Department declared Sali Berisha "non grata".
The DP only had a democratic name, but at its core was authoritarianism and loyalty to the one. He had given the evidence from the beginning of the time and continuously. Disappointed ambitious people were constantly detached from her body, mentioning "free speech", "internal democracy" or criticizing Berisha's absolute authority. But they returned as obedient pets as elections approached. They served the Party for the next trick, democracy, tolerance, "new beginning" and in exchange received ministerial or parliamentary posts. This constant surrender of some personalities increased Berisha's authority in the Party, turning him into its absolute leader.
The 2008 constitutional amendments were also the practical surrender of any independent voice. The Party Chairman received the right from the Constitution to appoint at least 60 deputies according to his exclusive wishes. There democracy died.
Those changes made the chair of the Party Chairman like that of a party monarch. Even the most democratic would become authoritarian. The greater the legal authority of the chair the more difficult it becomes to fall from that chair and self-confidence in its miraculous abilities. It turns into a kind of "Aladdin lamp" that turns subordinates into servile and servile into deputies. Unemployed opponents "outside the Party yard".
It was those competencies that took Basha by the neck. His "asses" were small enough to fill the huge chair where he was sitting. Failed causes, instability, constant political blunders turned the "small ass" Chairman of the big chair into a meme character. He did not know how to manage that Chair. He liked the Berisha methods of directing but did not have the Berisha charm of attacking the emotions of the public. He took care to share every responsibility of a big decision with others and especially with Berisha, creating the perception of dualism in the leadership of the Party. He was terribly insecure and vague in the finale of his decisions. And above all, Lulzim Basha made the wrong calculations. Not just legendary arithmetic gaffes. They are the most forgivable.
All his big political decisions are big mistakes. Starting from the abandonment of the Territorial Reform, Tents, handing over of mandates, a boycott of local elections, etc., etc.
Uncertainty was read in every one of his decisions. Said kindly. He was obviously the wrong man for a Party aiming for power. Berisha's shadow covered him in every minute of his presidency and this was his first and biggest mistake. He did not have the determination to part with Berisha, although he wholeheartedly wanted that parting. Because he was cowardly about what would happen. He made that decision too late, only when he thought his new ally was worth more than Berisha.
On September 9, he decided to form his own Party. For the first time, he made a decision worthy of the heavy carcass in which he was sitting. Like all cowards who have never made decisions themselves, Basha put forward the American shield. He made Berisha a hero that day. In the hope that he will cut off his neck and let him reign free.
But he did the miscalculations again.
He thought the heavy chair of the President and the help of the United States of America would suffice. Add to that the pro-American and modern discourse, the spotless technocrats that surrounded him or the acquired journalists. Day by day, the rhetoric of his supporters became harsher, more mocking of Berisha and deeply pro-American. Slowly, well-reasoned anti-Berisha suicide bombers were emerging in the media and were difficult debaters and often winners in television studios.
They were attacking the heart of the PD electorate, Sali Berisha. Not without success.
But this had the opposite effect on the DP electorate. Their strong point is not reasoning but emotion. Those who thought that with the reasoning they would fill the mind of the PD base were wrong. That electorate is accustomed to pathos, emotion. He loves Sali Berisha as the person who brought him to power for 13 of these 30 years. He loves her for her unparalleled charisma, noisy rhetoric, and leadership charm. He saw the electorate in Berisha the victim of a treacherous scoundrel. He saw in Lulzim Basha the servile of Yuri Kim, the biggest supporter of Edi Rama and Erion Veliaj.
Berisha's strategy to attack the base's emotions, by leaving America in its rhetoric as part of the conflict, had a tremendous effect. The epithets "trust", "hostage" and the victimization of an international conspiracy involving George Soros, Edi Rama, and Yuri Kim were quite convincing to them. They deeply believed that Sali Berisha is not the most corrupt man who has ruled this country. The comparison with Edi Rama and his government made Berisha look crystal clear in their eyes.
The closer Kim got to Basha and the stamp DP, the more the anger and hostility of a large part of the DP base increased. The adaptation of the harsh language by Basha and the supporters caused the separation of other people who had been doubled until that day. How can you call part of the "Bermuda Triangle" the man who only a month ago you described as "the Albanian leader who has given the most valuable contribution to the development of the country and the strengthening of democracy"? What is this hypocrite who makes white black and vice versa, without fluttering his eyelashes? Could the future be built with him?
A great role in the electoral catastrophe of the "alcove" that still bears the stamp of the DP also had the unification in the trench of Basha of all the propaganda entourage of Rama. Mero Baze, Baton Haxhiu, Carlo Bolino, Frrok Çupi, and other pro-government pens were released in the latest, deadly attack on Sali Berisha and in defense of Lulzim Basha. The DP electorate was used to having them against them. They were Rama's "mercenaries", his ideologues. If they defended Basha, the hostage rhetoric would take an argument. Inadvertently Berisha gained allies where he did not expect it. When Yuri Kim called in the middle of the campaign for "caution" not to vote "non grata", most likely the votes for Berisha were fewer. They increased significantly after that statement.
After the catastrophic result of the Democratic Party and the resignation of Lulzim Basha, the rest of the Alcove Party has decided to set conditions for unification. Their "non-negotiable condition" is the absence of Sali Berisha as a candidate for Party Chairman. They make this request to others, members of the Re-establishment Group. This is big nonsense. Shows they have not learned anything since March 6th. The 60 thousand votes received by the House of Freedom belong to Sali Berisha. He campaigned personally and got those votes. If you have to turn to someone there, it is Sali Berisha himself.
But even the invitation to join is nonsense. The alcove party is pro-American while the re-establishment commission group is in open contradiction with the Americans. Then how do you invite them to join ?!
What the Alcove Party needs to do now is hold on to the American core, stay true to its theses, and elaborate on its political discourse as it had begun. Establishing a new party. But it can not do so at the Democratic Party headquarters and with its seal. That Party and that headquarters already belong to others.
