The move comes after the striker made a serious accusation in an interview. United had appointed lawyers to explore possible action against Ronaldo for alleged breach of contract, but their preferred option was to engineer his departure and this was confirmed on Tuesday.
Ronaldo's allegations included that he was being forced out of the club, that senior management lacked empathy after his newborn son died in April, that the owners, the Glazer family, do not care about the club and that the manager, Erik ten Hag, does not respects it.
The 37-year-old had been instructed not to return to the club's training base in Carrington following his participation with Portugal at the 'World Cup'. He told a news conference in Qatar on Monday that he was "bullet-proof" and expressed no remorse for his behavior. "I don't have to worry about what other people think," he said. "I speak when I want."
Ronaldo himself has not yet reacted.
