Facebook and Instagram delete any posts that offer abortion pills

Facebook and Instagram have immediately begun removing posts offering abortion pills for women who may not be able to use them, following a Supreme Court ruling on abortion. Such social media posts were intended to help women living in states where pre-existing laws banning abortion came into force all of a sudden this Friday.

Memes and status updates explaining how women could legally receive abortion pills by mail exploded across social platforms. Some of them even offered to mail prescriptions to women living in countries that now ban abortion. Facebook and Instagram started removing some of these posts about abortion pills. Mention of abortion pills, as well as posts mentioning specific versions such as mifepristone and misoprostol, rose sharply on Friday morning in messages on Twitter, Facebook, Reddit and TV, according to an analysis by media intelligence firm Zignal Labs.
