Guitarist Tom Verlaine, who rose to fame in the New York punk scene of the 1970s as the frontman of the rock band Television, has died at the age of 73. At their peak, the band scored three UK top 40 hits and were acclaimed for their albums Marquee Moon and Adventure. But they had more success in Britain than their native US and split in 1978.
Verlaine's death was announced by Jesse Paris Smith, daughter of longtime collaborator Patti Smith. She did not specify the cause, saying he died of an illness without elaborating. Verlaine was regarded as one of the most skilled practitioners of music to emerge from the now-defunct CBGBs club on New York's Bowery, where their contemporaries included Blondie, The Ramones and Talking Heads. Although they rose to prominence due to the punk movement, their music was more complex than that of their rivals, with Verlaine and fellow guitarist Richard Lloyd trading long solos and intricate jazz-influenced riffs.
