Study suggests classical music may help fetal development

New research shows that listening to classical music while babies are still in the womb can stimulate their development by calming their heart rate. Scientists in Mexico found that exposure to music led to more stable heart rate patterns, positively affecting the autonomic nervous system.

The study involved 36 pregnant women, with researchers playing two classical pieces, The Swan by Camille Saint-Saëns and The Golden Harp by Abundio Martínez, to their fetuses.

Heart monitors recorded the responses, which were then analyzed using mathematical tools that measured heart rate variability. Greater variability is associated with healthy nervous system development.
