Earthquakes in Santorini, Greece declares state of emergency on the island

A state of emergency was declared in Santorini on Thursday amid intense and persistent seismic activity that is shaking the popular Aegean island and others in its vicinity, such as Amorgos, Anafi and Ios, and residents and visitors were seen fleeing in droves.

The state of emergency will be in effect until March 1, civil protection authorities said in a statement, as tremors continued to shake the area, increasing the risk of severe landslides and rockslides.

On Wednesday night alone, six magnitude 4 earthquakes were recorded in the sea area around Santorini, followed by a stronger 5.2 tremor south of Amorgos.

"These constant shaking is starting to tire us out. Especially last night. It was non-stop. People are worried, of course, but the biggest problem is that we are awake all the time ," said Anafi Mayor Iakovos Poussos.
