"EU Continues to Support Balkan Autocrats"

The opposition movement It’s Enough (DJB) estimated on Tuesday that in the European Union they were all too aware of the violation of the democratic principles in Serbia and that by pretending not to see this its officials “spat in the face” of the citizens who are protesting against the current authorities.

In response to the statement of European Commission spokesperson Maja Kocijancic that the parliament was the place in which to discuss important government matters (see V.I.P. No.6552), the DJB states that the Serbian parliament has for a long time not been a place for debates but rather “a place where voting takes place at the sound of a bell”.

In the parliament “even up to 90 items on the agenda are combined into one debate, even though they have no connection to each other, the ruling coalition has for more than a year been reciting meaningless amendments (...) thus denying the opposition time to propose necessary changes of the poorly comprised law proposals”, remind the DJB.

In the announcement, it is stated that in parliament the opposition MPs are exposed to constant insults and harassment and that they did not have even the opportunity to respond to these attacks since their microphone is constantly turned off or they are prevented to speak in other ways.

MPs of the ruling coalition “obediently accept all the government proposals, which are to a large degree only translated EU directives from English, without any kind of deeper thinking about the matters at hand and the problems which law proposals accepted in such a way will create to the citizens during implementation in practice”, the DJB announces.

The Movement also stated that the EU officials “knew very well” that the election process in Serbia “has been rendered pointless, starting from the absolute control of the media, through disordered electoral rolls, the buying of votes with money, packages of goods and free medical examinations (...) all up to open intimidation and blackmailing of the voters”.

“Turning one’s head to the other side and pretending not to see all this, the EU has practically spat in the face of all the citizens who for already three months now have been protesting throughout Serbia demanding the creation of fair election conditions and calling on the opposition MPs to boycott the work of parliament and fight until the fulfillment of these requests. The EU has in this way once again given its full support to the autocratic management of Serbia and showed that the violation of democracy in our country not only does not concern it but rather does not even interest it at all”, states the announcement.
