EU Enlargement Commissioner: Membership Talks with Albania will Launch before Zagreb Summit
European Union (EU) Commissioner for European Neighbourhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations Oliver Varhelyi said in a joint press conference with Prime Minister Edi Rama on Thursday that the membership talks for Albania would be launched before the Zagreb EU Summit. He added that the European Commission still believed that Albania had met the conditions for launching the membership talks, and the changed methodology on EU enlargement would lead to France’s and the Netherlands’ changed stance on this matter.
After meeting with Rama, Varhelyi and the Prime Minister paid a visit to the earthquake-hit neighborhoods in Durrës. “We stand by Albania following the devastating earthquake. The European Commission will organize international donors’ conference on 17 February in Brussels, important that partners and international financial institutions contribute to reconstruction. EU working on significant contribution,” a Twitter posting in regards to the visit said.
Varhelyi also met with President of the Republic Ilir Meta, who told him that the meeting of the nine Bundestag conditions by Albania was the fastest way to the launching of accession negotiations with the EU. Commissioner Varhelyi also met with Assembly Speaker Gramoz Ruçi.
He then met with a delegation of the United Opposition, hailing the agreement on electoral reform as a way forward on this process and an important milestone. Talking to reporters after the meeting with Varhelyi, Democratic Party Chair Lulzim Basha said to have told him that the opposition was ready to pay any cost to ensure the holding of free and fair elections and restore the legitimacy of the state institutions as the only way to solve the present political crisis. Basha said to have welcomed the EU assistance that led to the establishment of the Political Council on the electoral reform.
