EU Mobilizes Emergency Support Following Albanian Earthquake. U.S Embassy: We

Following the 6.4 magnitude earthquake and the aftershocks that hit Albania on Tuesday, the European Union (EU) Civil Protection Mechanism was activated at the request of the Albanian authorities, said that EU Delegation in a press statement.

“The EU stands by Albania at this difficult time. Search and rescue teams from Italy, Greece, and Romania are already on their way. In addition, I would like to thank Hungary, Germany, Croatia, France, Estonia, the Czech Republic and Turkey for their offers of assistance through the European Civil Protection Mechanism. My thoughts are with the victims and all the people affected by the disaster,” said Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management Christos Stylianides.

EU Ambassador to Albania, Luigi Soreca, stated on Tuesday morning: “We are deeply saddened by the loss of life and destruction caused by today's earthquake. Our hearts go out to the Albanian people and all the families affected by this tragedy. The EU Delegation stands by the people of Albania and remains in contact with the authorities to provide assistance.” On Tuesday morning, Commissioner Stylianides spoke on the phone with President of the Republic Ilir Meta and reaffirmed EU’s solidarity and readiness to help.

The EU said to have activated the Copernicus system for the production of satellite images of the affected zones, and the EU’s 24/7 Emergency Response Coordination Centre is in contact with the Albanian authorities and continues to monitor the situation. “Additional EU assets are on standby should they be needed. The EU will also deploy a Civil Protection Team to help the authorities co-ordinate the response and assess the damage,” the EU Delegation said.

In related news, the United States Embassy to Tirana issued a press statement on Tuesday morning “The United States sends its deepest condolences to all the families and communities affected by today’s earthquake. The United States stands with our friends in Albania, just as Americans and Albanians have always stood by each other during difficult times. We will continue to closely monitor the situation and stand ready to offer our support,” said a press statement issued by the United States Embassy in Tirana earlier today.
