German newspaper keeps publishing intercepted phone calls involving PM Rama, SP officials
German newspaper Bild published on Monday 16 intercepted phone calls that allegedly belong to Serious Crimes prosecutors’ case file no. 184 related to the mayoral by-election in Dibra Municipality. According to Bild, Prime Minister Edi Rama appears in one of the intercepted phone calls as talking to a Ministry of Interior official, who, as reported by Bild, was the supervisor of the Socialist Party’s vote-buying operation.
Rama reacted to Bild’s new publication on Twitter, saying he encouraged prosecutors to investigate the case in question in order to show where rumors ended and culpability evidence began. Rama described the prosecutor who leaked the intercepted phone calls as “Sali’s [Berisha] servant”, saying that the leaking of these uninvestigated intercepted phone calls was done for blackmailing purposes rather than to do justice. He said that the Democratic Party (DP) had kept these intercepted phone calls for this very day when they felt that Albania should be attacked by means of these “German scoops,” in order to block the membership talks and to prevent the justice that would be done by the review of Chapters 23/24. In a later twist, he said he would sue Peter Tiede – the German journalist who had published the intercepted phone calls – at a German court. Tiede replied to Rama on Twitter, saying that Rama would sue him at a German court because the courts in Albania were not functional, adding that Rama had just admitted as much through his statement.
DP Chair Lulzim Basha said in a reaction to the latest publication of intercepted phone calls that the only solution for the Albanian people, in view of the deplorable situation described by the same, was to participate en masse in the 21 June anti-government protest and to support the opposition’s cause to free the country from Edi Rama and his criminal regime.
