Grenell: Serbia to Temporarily Pause Derecognition Campaign

The governments of Serbia and Kosovo have obligated themselves that they would temporarily pause the derecognition campaign, or rather for membership in international organizations on the eve of the upcoming meeting of the representatives of the two sides in Washington, published the US special presidential envoy for Serbia-Kosovo talks, Richard Grenell.

“Great news! I have received the commitment from the governments of Kosovo and Serbia to temporarily pause the derecognition campaign and the seeking of international memberships in order to meet in Washington, DC at the White House on June 27 for Dialogue discussions”, Grenell posted on his Twitter account.

“If either side is unsatisfied with the June 27 discussions then they will go back to the status quo after they leave Washington. As we have consistently said, we must first make progress on growing the economies. This is the focus. I look forward to these discussions,” he added.

Kosovo President Hashim Thaci welcomed Grenell’s announcement.

“U.S. leadership & support has always been decisive for the prosperous future of Kosov[o]. Therefore, I welcome the invitation to resume the dialogue on normalization of relations under the leadership of President Trump”, Thaci posted on Twitter.

Earlier on Monday, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic hinted at the possibility of, after his visit to Russia, also traveling to the US.

Vucic, who spoke on the telephone on Monday with President Vladimir Putin, will have talks on 22 June in Belgrade with the European Union’s newly appointed special envoy to Serbia-Kosovo talks Miroslav Lajcak and on the following day he will leave for Moscow, where he will meet with Putin, and on 24 June he will attend the Victory Day parade.

“I do not exclude the possibility of, after that, going to Washington for a couple of days and to some other places which I cannot reveal. There will be a lot of work and various requests primarily surrounding Kosovo. It is our standpoint that we can discuss technical matters, the free flow of goods and services but I still have not heard an essential proposal”, Vucic told journalists in Belgrade.
