IRI Poll: Half of the Serbian Citizens Want to Join EU

Half of the Serbian citizens (without Kosovo) stated that they would say yes at the referendum for entry into the European Union, show the results of a survey organized by the International Republican Institute (IRI) on a representative sample of 1,027 citizens older than 18, portal talas.rs reported on Tuesday.

However, as many as 40% of the interviewees are against joining the EU, since they believe that they would not have any benefits from that membership, show the results of the survey.

The foreign-political orientation of the interviewees is interesting; as many as 62% of them believe that Serbia should not turn either to the East or the West, 16% believe that Serbia’s place is with Russia and China, 13% believe that Serbia is closest to the Western European countries and the US, and 10% did not know or did not want to respond to this question.

Serbia has more in common with Russia than with the West on the matters of moral, values, culture and intellectual values, 43% of the interviewees believe, and more than 50% would wish for Serbia, to in these areas, resemble Russia even more.

However, when the focus is turned to the quality of life and the living and economic standard, the situation is drastically changed: 52% believe would like to have Western values concerning employment and the standard of living, health, pensions and social benefits.
