Jeremic: Majority of Serbs Will Never Accept Independence of Kosovo

The majority of Serbian people would never accept Kosovo as an independent country, so the first priority would be to establish normal living conditions for Kosovo Serbs and Albanians, the leader of People’s Party and chairman of the opposition Alliance for Serbia (SzS) Vuk Jeremic said.

“I was told in the State Department that we would have to understand that Kosovo became an independent country and we should accept the reality that would not change. I am afraid this is impossible for anyone who holds up to our cultural and national identity”, Jeremic said at the lecture on Georgetown University, People’s Party announced.

“To ask anyone in Serbia to formally give up on Kosovo under any conditions is asking for something that no one has done in the past six centuries and this should not be attempted in the 21st century either”, Jeremic said after he met in the State Department with Matthew Palmer, Deputy Assistant Secretary in the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs.

“It is absolutely impossible for us to give up on Kosovo. No one in the history of Serbia has done it, not even during the full five centuries of the Ottoman rule or during the Nazi occupation in World War II”, Jeremic said.

“I believe that we must establish normal living conditions in Kosovo in a short period of time, so Serbs and Albanians can start living without tensions. Currently, this is very difficult, because both in Belgrade and Pristina the power is in the hands of people who have been deeply involved in hostilities in the late 1990s. [Kosovo President] Hashim Thaci used to be a war commander, and by my deep conviction he is a war criminal, and [Serbian President] Aleksandar Vucic used to be [former Serbian President Slobodan] Milosevic’s Minister of Information. I doubt that the two of them are able to reach an agreement on normalization of life, together with their colleague [Kosovo Prime Minister] Ramush Haradinaj”, he said.
