Kosovo Assembly Adopts Resolution on Serbia’s Genocide in Kosovo

Kosovo MPs adopted on Thursday evening the Resolution on Serbia’s Genocide in Kosovo in 1998 and 1999, whose passing was initiated by Parliament Speaker Kadri Veseli, electronic media reported.

Serbian MPs did not attend the session. Altogether 79 MPs, without a single vote against, voted for the resolution demanding condemnation of Serbia’s war crimes and reparation of the damage done during the war.

During the debate on a draft of the resolution, MPs talked, from their own point of view, about the events in 1998 and 1999, and some of them referred to the alleged persecution of Albanians throughout centuries.

Although they supported the adoption of the resolution in principle, some MPs stressed this was a non-binding document, which did not have political and executive power.

Proposal for one more resolution condemning the sexual violence towards women in Kosovo in 1998 and 1999 will also be discussed.

At Veseli’s initiative, the parliament will also vote on the formation of the commission for documenting the crimes committed by the Serbian state. Veseli said that the goal was arresting and punishing criminals, based on the commission’s reports.

He explained that the establishment of an international court was needed for prosecution and punishment of criminals, which is interpreted by one part of Kosovo’s public as Veseli’s manipulation and an attempt to minimize the potential impact.

Veseli also announced the construction of a genocide museum and a memorial center.

Resigned Minister for Communities and Return Dalibor Jevtic (Serb Ticket) said, commenting the session, that this was one more “poke in the eye” in the relations between Serbs and Albanians.

There have been no official reactions from Serbia to adoption of the resolution except that on Thursday morning the chairman of the parliamentary committee for Kosovo Milovan Drecun said that Pristina, faced with the loss of support after a series of unilateral actions and refusal to continue the dialogue with Belgrade, wanted to draw attention to themselves and away from the crimes they committed by a propaganda campaign and present itself as a victim.
