Kosovo Government in crisis over COVID-19 emergency

Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti (Lëvizja Vetëvendosje – Self-determination Movement) on Wednesday dismissed Interior Minister Agim Veliu amid a dispute over whether to impose a state of emergency, in order to better contain the spread of COVID-19 in the neighbouring country. Kurti said that Veliu was dismissed because he had “undermined the work of the government” by making statements against official positions on declaring a state of emergency, as well as allegedly spreading panic over the Novel coronavirus epidemic. The dismissal led to a ruling coalition crisis, in view of the fact that Veliu is an LDK (Kosovo Democratic League) official, and that the LDK leadership was utterly unhappy of this move. LDK Chair Isa Mustafa announced that the LDK will file today a motion for a vote of no-confidence against the government led by Kurti, further listing the reasons for this move.

According to him, Veliu’s dismissal showed that Kurti was unwilling to co-operate with the coalition partners. Moreover, according to Mustafa, Kurti’s refusal to repeal the 100% tax was another ground of contention with the coalition partner. He said that it threatened the strategic partnership with the United States, in view of the repeated U.S. appeals for the lifting of the same tax
