Kurti: Thaci and Vucic Already Made Deal, Attempting to Oust My Government

Kosovo Prime Minister Hashim Thaci said on Wednesday that he is convinced that Kosovo and Serbia presidents Hashim Thaci and Aleksandar Vucic made a deal and that it has resulted in urgent demand for lifting duties.

At an extraordinary session of the Kosovo Parliament, Kurti said the demand for the lifting of tariffs is not a prerequisite for talk resumption but to close a deal prepared beforehand, Radio Free Europe (RFE) reports.

He added that the idea behind it is to oust him and his government so that “the one [Thaci] who made a deal in Kosovo’s name during secret negotiations can reach an accord that will now serve, not as dialogue resumption, but to end any possibility for dialogue”.

Kurti did not mention who is behind the idea to remove him, but it proceeds from his statement that he refers to the USA, as he said that Vucic demanded to clarify who is his interlocutor: “Kurti in Brussels or Thaci in Washington”. Kurti also said that, in order for Thaci to be the interlocutor, he and his government must be removed.

Kurti said the arrangement came from two-and-half weeks of considering territorial exchange and added that, although the dialogue was official interrupted following the introduction of tariffs, negotiations have never stopped and continued in secrecy.

He said tariffs will not be lifted without reciprocal measures toward Serbia. The Parliament session is held at the request of opposition Democratic Party of Kosovo (DPK), after the government ignored the US calls to lift tariffs on goods from Serbia and Bosnia-Herzegovina.

The US threatened with economic measures and Republican senators David Perdue and Rand Paul tweeted that, if Kosovo does not lift tariffs, the US should reconsider their military presence in Kosovo. The son of US President, Donald Trump Jr, also shared this statement.

Earlier on Wednesday, Kurti said he doesn’t believe that the US will introduce economic measures or withdraw troops because of Kosovo’s refusal to lift tariffs.

He said that, even if Kfor forces do withdraw, this won’t be because of tariffs but because of the general reduction of numbers of American soldiers abroad, namely in Afghanistan and in Syria.
