Local Elections in Northern Kosovo, Serbian Ticket Wins with no Challengers

On the extraordinary elections for Mayors in the four municipalities in northern Kosovo held on Sunday Serbian Ticket won, as expected, because it was the only Serbian party that had candidates at all, news agencies reported.

Formally, there were also candidates from the Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK) led by Hashim Thaci and the extremist Self-Determination Movement. In three municipalities – Leposavic, Zubin Potok and Zvecan there are almost no Albanians or there are not at all, while they live in small numbers in Northern Kosovska Mitrovica.

Representatives of other Serbian parties did not take part in elections, claiming that conditions for fair and democratic elections were not made.

Extraordinary elections were held because the Mayors have resigned in November when Kosovo introduced tariffs for commodities from Serbia.

The same Mayors who resigned have taken part in elections again and, as expected, they were elected: Goran Rakic (Northern Kosovska Mitrovica), Stevan Vulovic (Zubin Potok), Vucina Jankovic (Zvecan) and Zoran Todic (Leposavic).

The tariff on Serbian commodities is still in power, and now it remains to be seen if they should get their mandates again, will resign again, as they have announced already.

The turnout at the elections in Kosovska Mitrovica was 38.74 percent, in Zvecan 45.17 percent, in Zubin Potok 50.74 percent and in Leposavic it was 41.57 percent.
