Lulzim Basha: Country heading towards a coup d’état

Democratic Party (DP) Chair Lulzim Basha told Prime Minister Edi Rama that he would regret the removal of President of the Republic Ilir Meta. In a press conference held on Thursday afternoon, Basha said that Albania was heading towards a coup d’état situation, orchestrated by Edi Rama in conjunction with the drug mafia that had brought him in power and was keeping him there.

According to him, 30 June was no longer the constitutional date for the holding of the local government elections, and that Rama should be ousted without delay to pave the path to the solution of the current crisis. He said that promoting the debate on 30 June and the President’s dismissal were Rama’s theatre show in an effort to take away attention from his impending ousting, his cabinet’s replacement by a transitional government and the holding of early elections to have a parliament elected by the people, not by crime.

Basha ruled out an agreement with Rama, saying that the latter’s ousting was non-negotiable. He said that the opposition’s protests would continue and there would be no pausing in the opposition’s duty in defense of the constitutional order. In related news, tens of DP supporters rallied on Thursday afternoon against Prime Minister’s visit to Librazhd, throwing firecrackers and stones at Rama’s escort, as it was passing by.

Three local DP officials and a number of DP supporters were accompanied to the local police commissariat after the said incidents. In remarks delivered at the electoral campaign event held in Librazhd minutes after the incidents, Rama warned the said DP supporters that they run the risk of being sentenced with up to five years in prison for disrupting the electoral campaign.
