Memorial of Russian Ex-PM Primakov Unveiled in Belgrade

A bust of Former Russian Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Yevgeny Primakov was unveiled on Monday at the Russian Cultural Center in Belgrade to mark the 90th anniversary of his birth.

“Serbian public remembers Primakov for turning the plane back and canceling a visit to Washington on March 24, 1999, when he heard that NATO had begun bombing FR Yugoslavia,” news agency Tanjug said in a report.

The ceremony was also attended by Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, who said that Primakov had left “an indelible mark on world politics” and that the citizens of Serbia “felt the importance of his fight for justice and equity.”

“His demarche of 1999, known as the turnaround over the Atlantic, meant a lot to Serbia, but it was also a complete turnaround in Russia’s foreign policy that still allows it to maintain stability despite numerous challenges,” Vucic said.

Primakov was Prime Minister of Russia from September 1998 to May 1999 and had previously served as Minister of Foreign Affairs since January 1996. He passed away in 2015.
