Merkel aides urges Kosova leaders to slash tariffs, claims Belgrade media

Two very close associates of German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Jan Hecker, and Matthias Luttenberg visited Kosovo on Monday and conferred with Kosovo President Hashim Thaci and Prime Minister Ramush Haradinaj, and the Belgrade media claimed they came to persuade Kosovo authorities to give up on tariffs on goods from Serbia.

These reports are in disagreement with the recent writings of Serbia’s media, which have practically claimed that Germany gives the greatest support to Pristina, regardless of the abovementioned tariffs, which Belgrade poses as the main problem for the resumption of the dialogue. Officially, Germany has repeatedly demanded Pristina to withdraw tariffs.

During the day and evening, it was not announced whether German diplomats agreed on something with the top men in Pristina or whether there might have been any change in the policy of the Kosovo authorities regarding Serbia.

Haradinaj said after the meeting that he, Hecker and Luttenberg discussed the normalization of relations with Serbia, economic and political developments in Kosovo, as well as that he informed the two senior officials about the progress in the economic development of Kosovo, the strengthening of the rule of law and the law and the agenda of European reforms.

Haradinaj, on the behalf of Kosovo, thanked Germany for constant support in all domains.

The Kosovo Prime Minister did not want to answer the journalists’ questions, saying that there was no change in his attitude when it came to abolishing the tariffs.
