Milorad Dodik Stands by Disgraced FPO ex-Leader Strasche

Chairman of Bosnia-Herzegovina Presidency Milorad Dodik stood up for the former leader of the Austrian far-right Freedom Party (FPO) Heinz-Christian Strache, assessing that he was a victim of “a setup” and that what is seen on a compromising video does not cause any damage to Austria, news agency Tanjug carried on Monday.

Strache, who was also Austrian Vice Chancellor, resigned last weekend following a leaked video in which he apparently offered to trade lucrative government contracts for campaign donations from a supposed Russian millionaire. At the same time, he also stepped aside from the FPO helm.

Dodik, who has been on good terms with Strache, and has met him last time earlier this month, after the session of the presidency of his party of Independent Social Democrats (SNSD) in Banja Luka, said that the SNSD and the FPO “have good cooperation and will continue to cooperate”.

“It is obvious that it is set up, you see there was no harm. It’s been two years since [the video was made],” and nothing came of what was discussed and heard on the video, Dodik said.

“I thank [Strache] for supporting the Republic of Srpska in securing its status” in accordance with the Dayton Peace Agreement, Dodik also said.

For years, Strache courted votes of the ethnic Serbs from all parts of the former Yugoslavia living in Austria, who made a large number in that country’s population - and a significant number of them voted for him, first of all, because of his appearances in which he criticized the support of Western countries to independence of Kosovo and generally positive attitude towards Serbia, at least in his public statements.

In addition, the strong anti-Muslim FPO also exploited animosity of the Serbian diaspora in Austria towards the Bosniaks and ethnic Albanians spurred in the wars within the territory of the former Yugoslavia for election purposes.
