North Macedonia to Hold Early Elections in April 2020

Early elections will be held in North Macedonia on 12 April 2020, after the European Union failed to give the country a date to start accession talks, it was announced on Sunday.

Prime Minister Zoran Zaeo announced after a meeting with President Steva Pandarevski that the leading political parties had agreed that the date most suitable for the election is April 12, eight months before the end of parliament’s four-year term.

Zaev said that his Social Democratic Alliance had proposed for elections to be held already in late December, but that at the opposition’s insistence it was agreed that the elections be held in April.

Zaev called for early elections after French President Emmanuel Macron and other EU leaders on Friday blocked opening talks with Albania and North Macedonia.

“I’m disappointed and angry and I know our people feel the same,” Zaev said on Saturday, calling the decision not to open entry talks a “historic mistake”, Reuters reported.

“There is no time to lose and that is why my suggestion is to organize fast early parliamentary elections,” Zaev said.
