Opposition leader to Albanian citizens: Boycott Rama’s electoral farce

Democratic Party (DP) Chair Lulzim Basha called on Albanian citizens on Tuesday evening to boycott the electoral farce being staged by Prime Minister Edi Rama on 30 June, saying that it only served the criminal and autocratic regime led by Prime Minister Edi Rama. “These elections are invalid. They will not be recognized. I invite you to condemn them with your boycott. The opposition and I will do our utmost against this unlawful and criminal farce,” Basha said.

DP Chair Basha received on Tuesday in meetings the United States Embassy’s Charge d’Affaires a.i. Leyla Moses-Ones and the Head of Delegation of European Union to Albania, Ambassador Luigi Soreca. Asked by reporters on the issues discussed in his meeting with the U.S. diplomat, Basha said that he never commented on the issues discussed with foreign interlocutors. “There will be no election without the opposition on 30 June. They won’t be allowed, they won’t be accepted, they won't be recognized,” Basha said when further pressed by the journalists. Asked by reporters, Basha denied the existence of an instruction sent to the DP branches across the country to allegedly provoke incidents to prevent the holding of the local elections. He said that this piece of news had been produced by Rama’s media mercenaries, who were funded with taxpayers’ money.

The Chairs of the five small political parties allied to the Democratic Party (DP) – Republican Party, Movement for National Development (MND), Environmentalist Agrarian Party, Human Rights Union Party, and Demo-Christian Party – operating at present as a coalition within the opposition called the Centre-Right Group, called on Tuesday on the Albanian people not to patriciate in the 30 June local government elections, saying that it will be an anti-democratic and unconstitutional voting process. According to them, the Albanian people should reject this electoral farce that poses a serious threat to political pluralism in Albania.
