PM Kurti: A New Chapter in Kosovo Politics, a Lawsuit Against Belgrade

The newly elected Prime Minister Kurti announced the opening of a new chapter of Kosovo politics and added that he would be the prime minister of all citizens, regardless of how they voted.

He said that since the formation of the new government, the changes in the policymaking process that everyone had been waiting for, not only in domestic but also in foreign policy, would begin as well.

Kurti announced that he would ask Belgrade to accept responsibility for war crimes and war damage compensation, as well as that he would file charges against Serbia for genocide and to set up war crimes and genocide institute.

Serbia’s press, however, points to a contradiction between Kurti’s announcements that he would advocate the trial of war crimes suspects, as people convicted or suspected of war crimes are in his cabinet.

Vecernje Novosti posted on its website on Monday night that Kosovo’s new minister of defense, Anton Quni, was convicted in absentia of the killing of five Serbian soldiers back in 1998 by the Nis High Court. Tuesday issue of Politika also runs an article on the case but saying Quni was involved in the killing of six Serbian soldiers.

“He, along with seven (ethnic) Albanians, was tried in absentia, and the crime was committed in the area of the Kosare border post [on the border with Albania],” Novosti wrote.

Politika also recalls that Kosovo’s new Minister of Foreign Affairs, Glauk Konjufac, was under suspicion in a Pristina court for affiliating with a radical group that allegedly assassinated lawyer Azem Vllasi, a former Yugoslav-era communist senior official.

Talking about a possible dialogue with Belgrade, Kurti said he was willing to the resumption of the talks, but only if he provided a broad political consensus for it.

Kurti reiterated that Kosovo would aspire to NATO membership and partnership with the United States, but also announced numerous novelties such as the introduction of mandatory three-month military service for Kosovo citizens, as well as greater investment in the military and police.
