PM Rama is met with opposition supporters’ march in his Shkodra electoral

Prime Minister was in Shkodra on Thursday afternoon to hold an electoral meeting in the northern city, regardless of the Shkodra Municipality having previously denied the Socialist Party (SP) the permit to hold such an event.

The Democratic Party (DP)-led Municipality said they based such a decision on the presidential decree canceling the date for the local government elections. In remarks delivered at earlier that day in Parliament, Prime Minister Edi Rama said that the electoral event would be held nevertheless, adding that perhaps the DP plan was to repeat the 2 April 1991 events in Shkodra.

Once in Shkodra, the SP rally was met with a march of DP supporters, who clashed with the police forces engaged to ensure the Prime Minister’s safety. They tried to break the police cordon and enter the area where the SP rally was being held, throwing various hard objects at police officers.

This led to the police using teargas and tear-inducing spray, causing several citizens to lose consciousness and be accompanied in hospital. Newspapers report that an ambulance was not allowed through by the police forces, an episode later denounced by the opposition.

Participating in the march, Shkodra Mayor Voltana Ademi said no one could forbid Shkodra citizens from shouting the truth, calling on police authorities not to provoke the people. Prime Minister Edi Rama, on the other hand, said in his address that Shkodra would be his own personal challenge for the next four years.
