PM Rama meets U.S. State Department’s Reeker and Palmer in New York

Prime Minister Edi Rama met on the margins of the United Nations’ General Assembly works with U.S. State Department’s Acting Assistant Secretary Philip Reeker and U.S. Special Envoy for Western Balkans Mathew Palmer. Rama spoke of them as two long-time friends of Albania and of the Albanian people, seasoned connoisseurs of Balkans issues, and as unswerving supporters of the democratization reforms in Albania and of the country’s progress on its European Union (EU) accession path.

Acting Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Gent Cakaj also met with U.S. Special Envoy Matthew Palmer. In a lengthy Facebook posting, Cakaj said that the meeting touched upon a wide range of issues starting with the internal situation in Albania, the latest developments in the region and ending with bilateral co-operation in the multilateral organizations. “In regards to Albania’s internal situation, we jointly underlined the need for all-inclusive dialogue on the electoral reform in line with the OSCE/ODIHR recommendations.

This is key to further improving the electoral system’s quality and, as a result, the overall quality of democracy in Albania,” Cakaj said. In regards to the regional developments, according to Cakaj, the two interlocutors touched upon the need for the full normalization of Pristina-Belgrade relations, and also admitted that the Western Balkan’s EU accession was the key instrument for the region’s further stabilization, democratization, and development. “Finally, we talked about the bilateral co-operation in the OSCE framework, which is being materialized on a daily basis. The U.S. is an unmovable political and diplomatic reference point for Albania,”
