President meets Ambassadors on the political situation, receives a reply from CEC
President of the Republic Ilir Meta met on Monday with the Ambassadors of European Union member states accredited in Tirana, in order to brief them on the latest developments in the country, newspapers report. As reported, Meta told them that his decree canceling the date of the local government elections was fully constitutional and fully binding, as it had been published on the Official Journal. Reportedly, he described as a coup d’état the request of a number of MPs to launch the procedures for his impeachment. Meta also told them reportedly that he would exert his powers as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Albania to deploy the Army in the event of major threats to the constitutional order in the country.
In related news, he received a reply from the Central Election Commission (CEC) as to his last week’s request for information about the total number of MPs at Parliament. As per the reply, the Albanian Assembly has currently 122 MPs. According to the same, since the 2017 general elections, the CEC has filled 23 vacant MPs seats with candidates from the Democratic Party’s (DP) 2017 lists, 17 with candidates from the Socialist Movement’s for Integration 2017 lists, six with candidates from the Socialist Party’s 2017 lists, and two with candidates from the Party’s for Justice, Integration and Unity candidate lists. The reply also says that the DP candidate lists of the 2017 general elections have been currently exhausted.
