President Meta: Decree canceling date of elections is binding
President of the Republic Ilir Meta said on Friday that his decree canceling the date of local elections was applicable and binding on all, adding he was taking note of any institution that violated the law by not enforcing the decree. He dispelled the journalists’ questions on whether the decree could be reviewed by the Electoral College, as being claimed by the ruling majority, and also on the resolution approved by the Parliament against him a day before.
In an interview given to Al Jazeera over weekend, Meta said that he hoped the leaders of the Socialist Party and the Democratic Party – Edi Rama and Lulzim Basha – would come to him in order to reach a good agreement that could help the country solve the present political crisis and make progress in its European Union (EU) accession path. “I am sure I have done the best to avoid a fuller escalation of the conflict between the government and the opposition and to give to both sides the possibility to calm down, to reflect, and to soon enter the local [elections] for the best interests of all Albanians,” Meta said, adding that this decree was fully binding and that there would be no local elections on 30 June 2019. According to him, the country’s progress on its EU accession path would be compromised for years if the present political situation was not solved in a short time.
