President Meta starts consultations for a new election date

President Ilir Meta launched on Wednesday the consultations with political parties to set a new date for the local government elections. His first meeting was held with the Chairs of the five small political parties allied to the Democratic Party (DP) – Republican Party, Movement for National Development (MND), Environmentalist Agrarian Party, Human Rights Union Party, and Demo-Christian Party – operating at present as a coalition within the opposition called the Centre-Right Group.

Before going to the President, leaders met earlier the same day with DP Chair Lulzim Basha in order to coordinate their stance ahead of the meeting with the Head of State. In comments for the media after the meeting, MND’s Dashamir Shehi said that the meeting was a small step in the right direction. He added that the President would keep meeting with the other political parties on this matter and that the new election date would be the result of a Rama-Basha agreement.

Shehu said that, if the Socialist Party (SP) kept insisting on holding the elections on 30 June despite the presidential decree, the opposition would prepare for new battles that would be detrimental to Albania. In addition, President Meta met on Wednesday with Social Democracy Party (SDY) Chair Paskal Milo.

Milo said after the meeting that, though the SDY was part of the SP-led coalition, they supported the presidential decree on canceling the election date. He called on the political class to be led by the national interest and to set aside any petty interests in order to find a solution to the present political crisis that avoids a societal confrontation.
