President writes to OSCE and ODIHR: Local government elections have been canceled by presidential decree
The President of the Republic has written to OSCE Chairperson-in-Office and Slovakia’s Foreign and European Affairs Minister Miroslav Lajčák and to Director of OSCE/ ODIHR Ingibjörg Sólrún Gísladóttir, cc’ing to the letter OSCE Secretary General Thomas Greminger, OSCE Parliamentary Assembly President George Tsereteli, and OSCE PA Secretary General Roberto Montella.
In the letter, President Meta informs them of the decree he issued on 10 June to cancel the date of local government elections. He said that the presidential decree was in force and had been published in the Official Journal. “The decree is therefore legally binding and must be implemented by all national institutions involved in the administration of electoral process in Albania, including the Central Election Commission.
As a result, the electoral process that might be held in violation to this presidential decree will be null and void and Prime Minister Rama’s efforts to ignore and block the implementation of the decree of the President of the Republic are completely lawless and are worsening the crisis in Albania,” the President said in his letter.
