Reeker: Disappointing to see certain EU leaders with a sort of a 19th-century view of Western Balkans

Acting U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Philip Reeker criticized “certain leaders” in the European Union (EU) for holding what he called a “19th-century view” of the Western Balkans after the EU failed to begin membership talks with Albania and North Macedonia. Speaking to Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty’s Balkan Service on Thursday, Reeker said the United States was “disappointed” with the EU Council’s failure to decide on this matter on 18 October.

“The European perspective, the idea that these European countries want to join the EU, has been a key component of our foreign policy. We are not members of the EU obviously but we have supported that idea, and our assistance programs, our diplomacy have all supported the reform efforts that these countries have undertaken to move in that direction because we feel that it is in the best interest of the countries, the region and of Europe. And it is disappointing to see certain leaders with a sort of a 19th-century view of the Western Balkan’s region,” Reeker said.
