Serbia, Albania and North Macedonia Create “Little Schengen”

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic and Prime Ministers of North Macedonia and of Albania Zoran Zaev and Edi Rama signed on Thursday in Novi Sad a document titled “Little Schengen” on the creation of a joint area that foresees free movement of goods, capital, people and services.

After the signing, Vucic said the objective of this initiative is to create conditions by the end of 2021 for the citizens of the three countries to cross borders carrying only an ID card, and also to work in any of these countries without a work permit.

Saying trucks in the Western Balkans lose 26 million hours while waiting at border crossings, Vucic said that removing these hurdles would enable huge savings for companies and the overall economy.

Vucic announced the three presidents will present “most concrete” measures to implement these initiatives at the next meeting which will be held in Ohrid on November 10.

Rama declared that this deal does not mean that the country renounces from its European path, but simply that they cannot be hostages to problems in Europe, remain inactive and just wait for problems to get resolved.

Zaev said that the “Balkan Six” – the five countries of the Western Balkans and Kosovo – should join the initiative for closer economic ties of countries of the region.
