Serbia Building Wire Fence at Border with North Macedonia

Serbia has started setting up a wire fence on the border with North Macedonia near Presevo, which should prevent possible mass illegal border crossings, it was confirmed for Radio Free Europe South Slavic service in the local self-government in Presevo.

Shqiprim Arifi, the mayor of the municipality Presevo, which is located on the very southern border of Serbia and North Macedonia, told RFE that the construction of the wire fence was part of an agreement with the European Union and it represented additional security for the borders of countries on the periphery of the Union, in case of the mass influx of migrants along the Balkan refugee route.

He said that he had serious reservations about such treatment of refugees, but that this fence indirectly contributed to the process of European integration.

RFE did not receive an answer from the European Commission as to whether they were aware of or consulted on the issue of building a fence between Serbia and North Macedonia, but it published a photo of the preparatory work for setting up the pillars.

According to the latest information, there are about 4,800 refugees in Serbia, which is a significant decrease in the number as compared to March and April, when there were more than 10,000 people in the camps.

However, NGOs dealing with migrant issues claim that the influx of refugees along the so-called Balkan route has never stopped and that between 15 and 30 people arrive in Serbia every day.

Wire fences at the borders were set up by Hungary towards Serbia, North Macedonia towards Greece, Slovenia towards Croatia, while Montenegro also announced the building of such a barrier at the border with Albania.
