Serbia Rejects Albania’s Protest Note, But Sends Its Own

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Serbia invited the Ambassador of Albania to Serbia, Ilir Bocka, to hand over the protest note, in which “the strongest protest regarding the statements given during the recent joint session of the governments of Albania and so-called Kosovo, which imply the creation of the so-called Greater Albania” is voiced.

Serbia’s protest note is a kind of response to Tuesday’s event when Albania sent a verbal protest note to Serbia, which, however, according to pro-government media, the Serbian ambassador did not want to receive “because of the unacceptable views expressed in it”.

The entire galimatias started a few days ago, during the last weekend, when the outgoing Minister of Defense, Aleksandar Vulin, criticized the announcement of the abolition of the border between Kosovo and Albania, and criticized Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama, for taking a photo under the flag of Greater Albania.

Vulin said that he would not have done it if he “had any brains”.

On the official website of the Ministry of Defense, Vulin called Albanians 'Shiptar' on several occasions, a pejorative and politically incorrect term for this national community.

Rama said on Sunday that it was not true that he just wanted to remove the border between his country and Kosovo and thus form “Greater Albania” but that he would like to remove the border with Serbia also.

The protest note of Serbia reads that it primarily refers to the statements given at the joint session of the two governments held in Tirana, which refer to the abolition of the border between Albania and Kosovo.

“Such statements, which imply the unification of Albania and the Serbian province of Kosovo and the creation of a ‘Greater Albania’, are a justifiable reason for concern, both for Serbia and other countries in the region committed to preserving stability and intensifying cooperation in the region”, the Serbian note emphasizes.

The note also points to the daily efforts made by the highest officials of Serbia with the aim of developing bilateral political and all other relations with neighboring countries and bringing closer positions on which there is no agreement, the Ministry of Foreign affairs of Serbia announced.

The note expressed the expectation that even the highest officials of Albania will refrain from making statements in the future that disrupt bilateral relations and could destabilize the region.
