Serbian Ambassador to Russia Claims that Palmer’s Mission Will Fail

Ambassador of Serbia to Moscow Miroslav Lazanski said on Tuesday to TV N1that the Special Representative of the USA for the Western Balkans Matthew Palmer would not succeed in his new mission because the problem was such that it could be resolved only by the parties involved in the dispute.

Lazanski argues that none representatives for this area succeeded in their missions and that every American politician “should avoid it”.

“Palmer should not have accepted the task. All former envoys have either died suddenly or they have been dismissed, from Richard Holbrooke to Hoyt Lee. I do not know of any envoy for the Western Balkans, who succeeded”, Lazanski said trying to sound humorous.

“Only we alone can resolve the Kosovo problem – Belgrade and Pristina”, says Lazanski, to whom this was the first “serious” diplomatic statement. Lazanski has been a pro-regime journalist all his life, since the communist times in the 1980s.

He spent most of his career in the pro-government daily Politika and he is known to the general public only by his constant appearances as a member of the jury for the Miss of Serbia. It is not known if he has graduated from any diplomatic schools, the post of ambassador to Moscow is his first job of this kind.

In an interview toN1, he also said he believed that the current pressure on Belgrade to weaken the economic ties with Moscow was only a trade attempt, i.e. that Serbia was offered the abolition of the Kosovotariffs if they ‘loosened’ the relations with Russia.
