Serbian Analysts React to Kurti’s Announcement on Introduction of Conscription
Kurti’s first addressing as a Prime Minister was also commented on Tuesday by independent observers in Belgrade.
Military analyst Aleksandar Radic said that Kurti’s announcement of introducing general conscription and creation of mass reserve units “is a direct challenge to Serbia and the region because this is a clear message that Albanians believe they are surrounded by enemies”.
“Strengthening of the active part of Kosovo Security Force (KSF) and police have been inevitable because it is Pristina’s ambition to have a self-sustainable force. This part of Kurti’s plan can be linked to the short-time political moves in the context of the status of Serbs and negotiations on the status of Kosovo. Kurti decided to use an open threat and this would influence the assessment of the development of armed forces in the region”, Radic said for Beta news agency.
The announced introduction of conscription, as well as the announcement of pressing charges against Serbia for genocide, are a part of Kurti’s “populist manipulation” that would ignore the reality, political analyst Dusan Janjic said.
“You cannot introduce conscription, possibly you can introduce some training for the volunteers. They have a right to have a certain number of soldiers, but this is already being fulfilled through the agenda agreed earlier with NATO within KSF”, Janjic said for Tanjug news agency.
“This government would not be formed without the support of Quint countries, nor can it survive without this support. Kurti did not mention the continuation of the dialogue [with Belgrade] directly, but he accepted this obligation like he has accepted to cancel 100 percent tariffs on Serbian goods”, he added.
