Serbian Foreign Minister: I’m Rooting for Trump, Full Stop

The blame for the interruption of negotiations between Serbia and Kosovo does not lay with Serbia, and that is also clear to the United States, said the Foreign Minister Ivica Dacic in a statement by which he once again demonstrated that, unlike many others worldwide, the Serbian authorities view US President Donald Trump with sympathy.

Dacic told reporters in Belgrade that the US National Security Advisor John Bolton had, during their last week’s meeting in Washington, told him that the US had nothing to pressure Serbia about concerning the ordering of relations with Kosovo “since they know that the culprit is not in Belgrade, but rather in Pristina”.

“So much of Trump’s administration. And when you asked the [current speaker of the US House of Representatives] Nancy Pelosi, a Democrat, five years ago, what about Kosovo, she said that Kosovo was for them a closed subject. Even today in the [US State Department] this is dealt with by the third and fourth rank staffers. Therefore I root for Trump, full stop”, Dacic said.

When Trump won at the US presidential elections in 2016, Serbia was one of the rare countries whose officials welcomed it. Such a relation has resulted, on one hand, from the belief that the US administration which is headed by the Democratic Party, is traditionally unfavorably inclined towards Serbia, and on the other from the expectation that Trump, because of his anti-Muslim standpoints, will have more understanding for the position of Belgrade concerning the Kosovo issue.

Three years later, in Belgrade they are still convinced that the prospects for a solution which would be as much as possible acceptable to Serbia exist only while Trump is in the White House; therefore Dacic’s claim that he “roots for Trump”, i.e. hopes that he will in 2020 succeed in winning a second term.

Estimating that the dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina was “currently in a coma, and whether the resuscitators will reanimate it, that is still not known”, Dacic repeated that Serbia still remained committed to the Brussels agreement, but that it was clear that Pristina “had no intention of implementing it”.
