Serbian opposition: Boycott Inevitable Unless Authorities Sign Binding Document

The opposition Alliance for Serbia (SzS) asked the organizers of the round table with the authorities to include a binding document introducing changes in the state TV (RTS) and Regulatory Body for Electronic Media (REM) on the agenda or face a boycott.

Under the proposal, the changes in the RTS and REM would be introduced through the parliamentary procedure by September 15. The third round table between the authorities and opposition is scheduled to be held on Monday at the Belgrade University Faculty of Political Science (FPN) to will discuss the situation in the media. All three meeting was organized by the Open Society Foundation and FPN.

“If the authorities accept the proposal, it makes sense to continue the talks about remaining conditions for free elections,” the SzS said in a statement. “If the authorities are not prepared to accept this agreement, that means the time has come to declare a boycott of the coming parliamentary elections,” it said.

“The question of freedom of the media is not just a question of the 45 days of the election process but primarily of media freedom between two election cycles when Serbia is engulfed in total media darkness. If the authorities are not prepared on Monday to accept this agreement, that means that they want no agreement, especially not any changes in the field of freedom of the media which is the key condition for free and fair elections,” the statement said.

The SzS said that the current format of the talks with the authorities is not coming closer to the demands made by the opposition parties which signed the Agreement With the People and the organizers of the 1 in 5 Million protests.

“To finally get to the point where the demands from the protests in more than 100 towns in Serbia over the past nine months are met, we have to have direct negotiations between the authorities and opposition which would end in a binding document signed by both sides and implemented immediately in the agreed deadlines. If that does not happen, any participation by the authorities in any round tables and other talks is just a delay to waste time before the elections with no fundamental concessions made,” the SzS statement said.
