Serbian town Raises a Gratitude Monument to Russia for Aid During NATO Bombing

The assembly of the town of Prokuplje (southern Serbia, near the border with Kosovo) reached a decision on Thursday to build a gratitude monument to Russia for the aid during the NATO bombing in 1999, news agencies reported.

Serbian Foreign Ministry agreed with the proposal.

Russia sent a humanitarian convoy with an aero-mobile field hospital in 1999, which operated in Prokuplje throughout the bombing campaign. Many believed at the time that Prokuplje avoided more wartime destruction and bombing because of the hospital, not because it offered medical aid to the injured and wounded, but was also symbolic allied protection.
