SP MPs Postpone Passing of 'Anti-Defamation Legal Package'. EU Welcomes It

SP MPs Postpone Passing of 'Anti-Defamation Legal Package'. EU

The Socialist Party (SP) MPs decided in Thursday’s plenary sitting to postpone the review of the presidential decrees returning to Parliament for further review of the two laws of the so-called anti-defamation legal package. Chair of SP Parliamentary Group Taulant Balla said the vote would be postponed while the Council of Europe’s Venice Commission carried out an express evaluation on the same.

“The Venice Commission has notified us that it has agreed to check [the laws], using fast-track procedures, on 21 March. The vote on the decree will be postponed while we wait for the Venice Commission report,” he said. President of the Republic Ilir Meta welcomed the Parliament’s move as “a positive and responsible decision”.

The Democratic Party described this development as a victory for free speech. A group of Albanian human rights organizations welcomed the decision but said it was insufficient, as it was “not enough of a step toward the restoration of constitutional foundations”. “We welcome the decision by the ruling majority to postpone the vote on the Audio-visual Media Law. We look forward to the opinion of the Venice Commission and we encourage authorities to address the remaining concerns of media organizations and the international community,” Head of the European Union Delegation to Albania, Ambassador Luigi Soreca, said over Twitter.
